Markets :: Fine Chemicals/Biotech :: Industrial Biotech Plans Underway for First Commercial Oil Crop from Jatropha2:40 AM MDT | June 11, 2008 | Alex Scott Global Energy Trading Company (Getco; Fort Lauderdale, FL) says it has begun buying up “large tracts of land in Colombia and Peru” on which to grow jatropha, a weed-like shrub, for producing oil suitable for converting into diesel fuel. The proposed plantations would mark the first large-scale commercial cultivation of jatropha. Growing jatropha is sustainable and does not conflict with the growth of food crops, the company claims.
