Photo courtesy Bayer CropScience. Bayer CropScience says it has signed a joint development and commercialization agreement with KWS SAAT (Einbeck, Germany) for herbicide-tolerant sugar beets. The technology is based on the breeding of sugar beet varieties that are tolerant to herbicides in the ALS-inhibitor-class with broad-spectrum weed control. The sugar beet plants have a naturally occuring change in an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of essential amino acids. Bayer and KWS began working with the sugar beets in 2001.
