When terephtalic acid is produced by the oxidation of para-xylene, it generates several by-products including benzoic acid and phenol. “A conservative estimate would put the quantity of residues produced between 250,000-m.t. and 300,000-m.t./year,” Invista says. “These by-products are often burned as waste, but can yield valuable chemical components using...
