Fire Shutters Illinois Phenol-Acetone Facility

Blue Island Phenol (BIP; Blue Island, IL) and JLM Chemicals (Blue Island) say they have declared force majeure on phenol and acetone shipments from BIP’s Blue Island complex, following an August 24 fire in the facility’s oxidizer units. The complex was in the process of restarting after a power failure 12 hours earlier, and one employee was hospitalized for chemical burns, says Bill Moffatt, plant manager.
