Methanex Begins Restart of Alberta Methanol Plant

Methanex has begun the restart of its 470,000-m.t./year methanol plant at Medicine Hat, AB, market players say. The unit was idled in 2001 following a spike in natural gas feedstock prices that eventually resulted in the shut down of most North American methanol production. Methanex announced late last year it would restart the plant in April 2011. The restart of the facility marks an upturn in production economics for the chemical industry, players say.
