Total to close Carling cracker, convert site into polymer-resin hub

Total will close permanently its 340,000-m.t./year ethylene plant at Carling, France, the company announced today. The Carling steam cracker is expected to shut down in the second half of 2015. The announcement confirmed recent speculation that questioned the economic viability of the cracker, which sits on the Moselle River, near the Franco-German border. The Carling cracker is an "acutely loss-making" facility, Total says. Total's announcement follows a meeting of the company's Central Works Council today in Paris.
