PetroChina Handed Maximum Fine for River Pollution Accident

Dead in the water: Songhua spill caused contamination. Jilin Petrochemical (JPC; Jilin, China), a PetroChina subsidiary, has been fined Rmb1 million ($129,000) for an explosion in November, 2005 at the company’s Jilin site that caused about 100 m.t. of benzene to flow into the Songhua River, according to China’s official Xinhua news agency.
