Explosion at Total's Antwerp refinery kills two, petchem market impact uncertain

An explosion today at Total's 360,000-bbl/day refinery at Antwerp killed two people, according to a statement issued by the refinery. The blast occurred at 14.00 GMT, and operations at a part of Total's Antwerp complex have been stopped. The refinery's emergency plan has been activated, the statement says. The Total Antwerp refinery is a major producer of aromatics with capacity for 250,000 m.t./year of benzene and 580,000 m.t./year of mixed xylenes.
