Succinic acid can be used as a feedstock for making high-volume chemicals such as 1,4-butanediol (BDO), but the high cost of producing it from petroleum-based feedstocks has kept the market relatively small at about 50,000 m.t./year. Consultants project this figure to triple in the next five years, as the scale-up of lower-cost, biobased routes opens up new applications....
