Strong Global Demand Boosts Fertilizer Earnings

North American fertilizer companies posted strong fourth-quarter 2007 earnings, driven by increased global demand and high crop prices. Agrium reported net income of $172 million, compared with a net loss of $62 million in the same period of 2006. Agrium cites a $302-million increase in gross profits and a $35-million decline in expenses. Sales rose 58%, to $1.5 billion.
