Europe Takes Steps to Ensure Biofuels Are Sustainable

The European Commission has officially recognized seven schemes for assessing the sustainability of biofuels used in the European Union (EU) in order to safeguard against any negative environmental impact from its biofuel policies. “We need to make sure that tropical forests and carbon rich peatlands are not turned into oil palm or sugarcane plantations,” the commission says. “We also have to guarantee - that compared to fossil fuels - biofuels used in the EU deliver tangible greenhouse gas savings.” The system is designed...
