U.S. Senate, EPA to Review Flame Retardant Safety

The U.S. EPA says it will use its existing authority under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) to evaluate toxicity issues related to new and existing uses of certain flame retardants. EPA’s announcement follows a Senate hearing earlier this week convened by Senator Dick Durbin (D., IL).Durbin, assistant majority leader and chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, who says the recent Chicago Tribune series “Playing with Fire” makes it critical for Congress to pass a TSCA reform bill...
