Tata Chemicals to close UK soda ash plant, expand sodium bicarbonate capacity

Tata Chemicals Europe, the only producer of soda ash in the United Kingdom, plans to close the bigger of its two production facilities in the first half of 2014, which will lead to 220 job cuts, accounting for 38% of the company's UK workforce. The plants in the Northwich region of the United Kingdom are located at Winnington and Lostock, about two miles away. They have combined capacity for 700,000 m.t./year of synthetic soda ash.
