World News and Views :: Top of the News Sumitomo and Samsung to Establish JV for LED Sapphire Substrates12:23 AM MDT | March 28, 2011 | Deepti Ramesh Sumitomo Chemical says it has entered into an agreement with Samsung LED Co. (Suwon, Korea) to establish a joint venture in Korea for research & development, manufacture, and sale of sapphire substrates for light-emitting diodes (LED). The jv aims to become a comprehensive provider of LED-related materials in the future. LEDs are manufactured by slicing sapphire ingots into thin sheets that are processed into sapphire substrates, which are then coated with a luminescent layer.
