World News and Views :: Top of the News Süd-Chemie and Linde Start Straw-to-Biofuels Pilot Plant3:01 AM MDT | May 8, 2009 | Alex Scott with Rebecca Coons Süd-Chemie and Linde have started up a pilot plant for a process jointly developed by the two firms to manufacture biofuels from cereal straw and other cellulosic biomass. The plant is located at Süd-Chemie’s Munich research center. It has capacity to manufacture up to 2 m.t./year of bioethanol. The process is based on a technology that enables biofuels, such as ethanol, to be extracted from cellulosic plant matter using genetically engineered enzymes.
