World News and Views :: Top of the News Showa Denko Swings to Profit; to Expand Graphite Electrode Capacity in U.S.2:03 AM MST | February 9, 2011 | Deepti Ramesh Showa Denko has recorded a net profit of ¥12.7 billion ($155 million) for 2010, compared with a net loss of ¥38 billion in 2009. Sales for 2010 increased by 17.5%, to ¥797 billion, compared with 2009. Showa Denko’s petrochemicals segment recorded a 16% rise in sales in 2010, to ¥274 billion, compared with 2009. The operating profits for the segment however decreased by 39%, to ¥4.87 billion. Production of ethylene and propylene decreased in 2010, reflecting the shutdown for maintenance at plants, which take place once every four years...
