Settlement Requires FDA to Decide BPA Restrictions by March 31(Update)

The U.S. FDA says it will decide by April of next year whether it will restrict bisphenol A (BPA) in food packaging. The decision is part of a settlement with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC; Washington), an advocacy group, which petitioned FDA in 2008 seeking restrictions on BPA’s use in food packaging materials. The petition sought a ban on BPA in food packaging, food containers and any material likely to come in contact with food. Legally, FDA has 180 days to respond to petitions such as that filed by NRDC, and it sued FDA in 2010 seeking to...
