Senate Panel Advances Industry-Backed Plant Security Bill

The Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee has unanimously approved legislation that would extend the U.S. chemical plant security statute for three years, to October 4, 2013. The bill, sponsored by Senator Susan Collins (R., ME), has industry’s support in part because it would give facilities time to implement existing Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) regulations before making changes to the law.
