Reach: ECHA Issues Guidance to Reduce Extent of Animal Testing

Under pressure to reduce the number of animal tests that will be required under the Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (Reach) program, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA; Helsinki) has published new guidelines for chemical firms on animal testing. ECHA says the guidance will help industry “to consider all possible alternative methods for data generation on hazards to make sure that testing on vertebrate animals shall only be undertaken a last resort.” Estimates made during the negotiation of Reach predicted that 9 million...
