Millipore Acquisition Helps Boost Merck KGaA's Operating Profits and Sales

Merck KGaA posted an 18% fall in net profits for the fourth quarter of 2010 compared with the same period of 2009, to €46.5 million. The decline reflects one-off costs associated with the acquisition last July of U.S.-based biotechnology equipment supplier Millipore for €5.2 billion. However, the inclusion of Millipore helped boost Merck KGaA's fourth-quarter operating profits almost three fold, to €129 million and sales by 25%, to €2.5 billion.
