World News and Views :: Top of the News Hemlock Semiconductor announces layoffs, production cuts11:11 AM MST | January 15, 2013 | Rebecca Coons Leading polysilicon producer Hemlock Semiconductor says it will cut approximately 400 employees from its 2 US manufacturing sites and reduce polysilicon production in response to "significant" polysilicon oversupply and the threat of potential tariffs on polysilicon sales into China, one of the company's largest markets. Hemlock says the layoffs include approximately 300 at its Clarksville, TN, site, which is still under construction, and 100 employees at its Hemlock, MI, site will be affected.
