Evonik invests in biobased lubricants start-up Biosynthetic Technologies

Evonik Industries said today that it has closed on an equity investment in Biosynthetic Technologies (BT; Irvine, CA), a specialist in biobased lubricants. BT has developed and manufactures estolides, a new class of biobased synthetic oils that are used primarily in the passenger-car motor oil and industrial lubricant sectors. Field trials have shown that the biobased synthetic oils made by BT have exceptionally good technical characteristics and combat soot buildup in engines, which helps keep fuel consumption low, Evonik says.
