World News and Views :: Top of the News European Authorities Consider Rescinding Corn Hybrid Approvals12:37 PM MST | November 29, 2007 | CW Editorial Staff European Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas has indicated to agrochemical groups that he will recommend rescinding commercial cultivation approvals for two types of genetically modified (GM) Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) corn seeds. The ban would apply to Bt11, which is produced by Syngenta, and Bt1507, produced jointly by Dow Agrosciences and DuPont’s Pioneer Hi-Bred business. Both seeds are widely planted in Europe, but the commission says new studies indicate the corn varieties could harm the ecosystem. The EU approved the seed varieties several years...
