ENI Cracker Closure Becomes a Political Issue in Sardinia

A decision by energy company ENI (Rome) to close temporarily a steam cracker run by the company's Polimeri Europa subsidiary at the Porto Torres complex on the island of Sardinia is adding to fears that Italy's petrochemical industry is in meltdown. The closure will last at least two months, ENI says. The move led to walk-outs and protests by workers this week, which at one point closed down the local airport.
