World News and Views :: Top of the News ENI Cracker Closure Becomes a Political Issue in Sardinia9:56 AM MDT | July 17, 2009 | Peter Mapleston A decision by energy company ENI (Rome) to close temporarily a steam cracker run by the company's Polimeri Europa subsidiary at the Porto Torres complex on the island of Sardinia is adding to fears that Italy's petrochemical industry is in meltdown. The closure will last at least two months, ENI says. The move led to walk-outs and protests by workers this week, which at one point closed down the local airport. It has also drawn comment from all quarters of the Italian political spectrum, not least because the state is ENI’s principal shareholder...
