China suspends construction of Zhenhai petchems project following protests

China’s local authorities have suspended construction on a multi-billion dollar petrochemical expansion project near the eastern city of Ningbo, following massive demonstrations over the weekend expressing environmental concerns. Thousands of protesters against the project have won a pledge from the local government that the project to build a 1.6-million m.t./year para-xylene plant would be halted. The protests began a few days earlier in the coastal district of Zhenhai, the site of the petrochemical plant.
