California Senate Passes Phthalates Ban

The California Senate has narrowly passed a bill that would ban six types of phthalates in certain toys and child-care products beginning in 2009. The bill was introduced by Assemblywoman Fiona Ma (D., San Francisco) and passed by the California assembly in June. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R.) has until October 16 to act on the bill. “Passage of the bill defies common sense, the scientific evidence, and the state’s own plans to deal with possible risk from products in a unified, comprehensive, and science-based way,” says Marian Stanley...
