BASF, Novozymes, and Cargill announce biobased acrylic acid milestone

BASF, Cargill and Novozymes today announced the successful production of biobased acrylic acid at pilot scale. The production run is an important milestone in a joint development agreement originally formed between Cargill and Novozymes in 2008 to develop microorganisms that can efficiently convert renewable feedstock into the platform chemical 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3HP).  BASF, the world’s largest producer of acrylic acid, joined the project in August 2012 to develop a process for converting the biobased 3HP into acrylic acid.
