World News and Views :: Projects Wacker JV Breaks Ground on Silicon Solar Wafer Plant11:26 AM MST | November 20, 2007 | Chemical Week Editorial Staff Wacker Schott Solar, a joint venture between Wacker Chemie and Schott (Mainz, Germany), has broken ground on a project to build a silicon solar wafer plant at Jena, Germany. The €50-million ($73 million) first phase of the project is due for completion in April 2008. Capacity of the plant is expected to reach 100 megawatts/year by the end of 2008, the companies say. The facility will use “conventional technology,” with which individual wafers are sawed from multicrystalline silicon ingots, Wacker says. The Jena jv is one of two 50-50 partnerships...
