Finnish researchers discover gasification process to produce biofuels from forest residues

Researchers from the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT; Laskut) have found that a biomass- to-liquid (BtL) process using lignocellulosic biomass can be used in the production of high-quality biofuels for a price of less than €1/liter, VTT says. The research shows that the production of renewable biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass, mainly bark and forestry residues, could achieve an energy efficiency of 50–67%, depending on the end-product and process conditions.
