Indian Fertilizer Firm Hit with Closure Notice for Urea Spill Cover up

Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) says it has issued a notice on Kribhco (Surat, India), a producer of ammonia and urea, to close down one of its two urea plants at Hazira near Surat, some 200 miles north of Mumbai, after the company attempted to hide an illegal ammonia spill.   GPCB applied its notice on July 5 after Anil Patel, a regional officer for the board, discovered 14 buffaloes in fields near the urea plant that had died after drinking water from the Tapi river contaminated with discharge from the plant.
