City of Chicago Proposes Polystryene Ban10:35 AM MST | February 16, 2010 | KARA SISSELL Chicago city alderman Edward Burke (D.) has proposed a citywide ordinance that would prohibit food service providers and city facilities from using disposable polystyrene food service ware beginning July 1. The ordinance would exempt prepackaged foods that were packaged outside the city. In addition, specific types of food service ware may be exempted if officials determine there is no alternative that is both affordable and compostable, the ordinance says.
