OSHA Fines BP $50.6 Million in Case Related to Fatal 2005 Accident

U.S. worker safety officials say BP Products North America has agreed to pay a record $50.6 million fine for “failure to abate” violations the officials had identified at the company’s BP Texas City site, where 15 workers died in a 2005 accident. A 2009 follow-up investigation identified violations and set a timetable for corrective action. “Although the company made many changes related to safety, it failed to live up to several extremely important terms of that agreement,” OSHA says.
