EPA Orders FMC to Step Up Controls on Phosphine Gas

FMC must take additional steps to limit phosphine gas emissions at its former phosphate mine near Pocatello, ID, according to a unilateral administrative order EPA issued earlier this week. The site is part of the Eastern Michaud Flats Superfund site where FMC manufactured elemental phosphorus from phosphate from the late 1940â€™s to December 2001. EPAâ€™s requirement builds on a 2006 consent decree ordering FMC to build a gas extraction and treatment system at the siteâ€™s capped containment ponds.
