Study Finds 2,4-D May Increase Crops' Water, Nutrient Needs

Crops thought to be unaffected by a widely-used herbicide may in fact need more water or nutrients to grow, according to a Department of Energy-funded study recently published in The Plant Journal. According to lead researcher and Perdue University horticulture professor Angus Murphy, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) can adversely affect a plant protein integral to the development of plant root hairs, which bring water and nutrients into the plant.
