FDA Issues New and Proposed Requirements for Sunscreen Labeling

FDA has issued a rulemaking package including testing protocols for products labeled for “broad spectrum” UVA and UVB protection. It will also limit claims manufacturers can make regarding “waterproof,” “sweatproof,” and “long-lasting” protections. FDA also proposes that products claiming protection above SPF50 require special approval by authorities. Significantly for chemical manufacturers, the FDA’s announcement did not include a formal response to a petition submitted by consumer and environmental groups concerned about the safety of nanoscale active ingredients use in sunscreens, attorneys say.
