European Authorities Investigate Syngenta’s Plan to Buy Monsanto’s Sunflower Seeds Unit

The European Commission has opened a three-month investigation into Syngenta’s proposed acquisition of Monsanto’s sunflower seeds business. The $160-million deal was announced in August 2009 and the commission says it received notification on April 28, 2010. “The commission’s initial market investigation indicated potential competition concerns with respect to the breeding and commercialization of sunflower seeds and sunflower seed-treatment products in Europe,” the commission says.
