EPA Delays Release Date for Ozone NAAQS Rule

EPA says it will not meet its July 29 target date for releasing a final rule revising the National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for ozone. The ozone NAAQS was last updated in 2008 and under normal circumstances would not be revisited until 2013. However, the Bush administration’s 2008 rule did not conform with the recommendations issued by EPA’s science advisory committee, a highly unusual move, and the current EPA administrator Lisa Jackson says it is unlikely the 2008 standard would withstand a legal challenge.
