China Arrests Thousands and Closes Businesses in Crackdown on Food Safety

Nearly 2000 people have been arrested and more than 4900 businesses have been shut in China during a national campaign to crack down on illegal additives in food. The food safety commission in China’s State Council says the campaign, which was launched in April, has so far inspected 5.92 million food and food additives manufacturers and catering businesses. Authorities from the departments of agriculture, industry, quality control, and food have conducted these inspections.
