DOE Funds LS9, HCL Cleantech Projects2:39 PM MDT | July 19, 2011 | Rebecca Coons Synthetic biology start-up LS9 (San Francisco, CA) and HCL CleanTech (Oxford, NC) say they have secured $9 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) a process to produce diesel fuel and drop-in replacements for other fuels and chemicals. As part of the grant, the two companies have agreed to combine their respective technologies. LS9 has developed microbes that convert fatty acid intermediates into petroleum replacement products via fermentation of renewable sugars.
