Senate Panel Examines BP’s Accident in Texas

Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB; Washington) chair Carolyn Merritt told a Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) committee panel last week that the board’s investigation into BP’s March 2005 accident at its Texas City, TX facility uncovered a “troubling picture of a corporation that did not always invest sufficiently in safety.” The explosion and fire killed 15 workers, and investigators say the primary cause was the facility’s use of a blow-down drum, instead of the more modern flare system, to vent certain...
