Protests Halt P-Xylene Project

The municipal government of Xiamen, China has suspended construction of a $1.4-billion para-xylene plant in the city after local residents held mass demonstrations, and sent more than 1 million mobile phone messages to the city authorities, in protest against the project. Residents say that the p-xylene unit would cause health hazards and pollution. The city government says it will reassess the environmental impact of the project in light of the protests.
