Mitsubishi Incurs Penalty for Fatal Accident at Ethylene Unit

The Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI; Tokyo) says that an administrative penalty has been imposed on Mitsubishi Chemical following an examination of reports submitted to METI’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA; Tokyo) on the causes of a fatal accident at Mitsubishi’s No. 2 ethylene plant at Kashima, Japan last December. NISA, in accordance with Japan’s High Pressure Gas Safety Law, will revoke the certification of the Kashima plant until security tests are completed, METI says.
