Merck & Co. to Settle Vioxx Claims

Merck & Co. agreed earlier this month to pay a total of $4.85 billion to 47,000 groups of plaintiffs to settle a class-action lawsuit related to Vioxx, Merck’s former blockbuster painkiller drug that was withdrawn from the market in 2004. Vioxx was withdrawn because of side-effects including heart attacks and strokes that resulted in a number of patient deaths. Merck says it will pay the settlement into a fund and that plaintiffs may petition to receive a portion of the amount. Plaintiff groups include patients who had been prescribed Vioxx, and the...
