European Commission proposes reduction in use of plastic bags

The European Commission has adopted a proposal that requires European member states to reduce their use of lightweight plastic carrier bags. Such plastic bags are often used only once, but can persist for a long time in the environment, causing problems in particular to marine life, says the European Commission. Individual member states can choose specific measures to address the issue, including national reduction targets, a charge to use plastic carrier bags, or even a ban under certain circumstances. Member states must implement measures within two years...
