ENI invests €700 million to restructure Gela refinery

ENI (Rome) has announced plans to spend €700 million ($896.6 million) to reconfigure its Gela, Italy, refinery, to transform it from a loss-maker into a profitable facility and make it more environmentally friendly. The plans include construction of a hydrocracker and research into third-generation biofuels production from algae. ENI’s chemicals subsidiary Versalis produces polyethylene at Gela, using ethylene from Versalis’s Priolo, Italy, cracker.
