Huntsman Scales Up Renewable PG Process

Huntsman says it is scaling up its proprietary process to produce propylene glycol (PG) from glycerin—a by-product of biodiesel production, and will make it available for customer trials as early as next month. Huntsman plans to produce glycerin-based PG commercially by 2008, with initial capacity of 100 million lbs/year. “We expect the rapid growth in biodiesel production worldwide to create a surplus of glycerin and, with it, an opportunity,” says Dave Parkin, v.p./performance intermediates at Huntsman.
