Europe Lags U.S. in Biotech Sector R&D

Europe needs to step up its investment in biotech R&D and establish supportive regulatory policies if it is to keep pace with the U.S., says Stephan Tanda, board member for DSM and chairman of industry biotech association EuropaBio. Total biotech R&D spending by publicly traded companies in the U.S. in 2009-2010 was $17.6 billion. This compares with €3.4 billion ($4.7 billion) in Europe during the same period.
