EnviroTech :: Innovation Bayer Starts Up Pilot for CO2-to-Plastics; Eyes Full Production in 20151:35 PM MST | February 18, 2011 | Alex Scott Bayer earlier today started-up a pilot plant at Leverkusen that uses CO2 as a raw material for making plastic. The plant produces a chemical precursor into which CO2 is incorporated and then processed into polyols for use in polyurethanes (PU); a material used in many everyday products. “If the testing phase goes well, the industrial production of plastics based on CO2 should start in 2015,” Bayer says. CO2 - a waste gas and key contributor to climate change - can now be recycled and used as a raw material and substitute for petroleum, the company...
