BASF Buys Merck KGaA's Battery Electrolyte Business (update)

BASF has agreed terms to acquire Merck KGaA’s (Darmstadt, Germany) battery electrolytes business. BASF says the purchase price is in the "low double-digit millions" of Euros. Merck says the business was at an early stage of commercialization. The acquisition follows BASF’s purchase in January of an equity stake in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery developer Scion Power (Tucson, AZ) for $50 million.   Electrolytes are complex formulations that ensure the transport of electric charge inside the battery.
