Ava Biochem starts production at first sustainable 5-HMF plant

Ava Biochem (Muttenz, Switzerland) has begun operation of the first industrial plant for production of sustainable 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), the company announced. The first phase of the Ava Biochem 5-HMF production plant has a capacity to produce 20 m.t./year, with a purity of up to 99.9%. The feedstock is a variety of renewable biomasses, such as wood, which are not in competition with foodstuff production, the company says. The plant is located at Clariant's Infopark in Muttenz.
